River Basin Days is a monthly series of outdoor public programs geared towards families. Join us at different locations around the Fraser River Basin as we explore this incredible watershed! Our staff will guide you through one hour of activities as we learn about the biodiversity of this great river.

Derby Reach Regional Park

Nature Boats

Come sail away with the Fraser River Discovery Centre! This month we’re headed to Derby Reach Regional Park in Langley to build our very own nature boats! We’ll explore what kinds of objects float, scavenge for building materials, and learn a few simple boat-making techniques. Then, we’ll watch our boats set sail on their inaugural voyage!

This event will take place rain or shine, so please come prepared for the weather.

Registration cost includes admission to the Fraser River Discovery Centre. Pay when you register for this workshop, and the next time you visit the Centre in-person, you will be admitted for free.

WHEN: Saturday, July 11th, 2:00-3:00 PM and with enough interest, another session might be offered at 12:30-1:30PM. 

WHEREDerby Reach Regional Park (meeting location at Heritage Area Parking Lot) 

WHAT:  

  • Explore what objects float 
  • Learn boat-building techniques 
  • Build and sail your boat 

WHO: While everyone is welcome, this workshop is aimed at children and their families. 

COST: Includes admission to the Discovery Centre. Specific costs are listed below:   

  • Family Ticket ($20.00) – for 2 adults and up to 4 children   
  • Adult Ticket ($8.00) – Adult 19 and older   
  • Senior Ticket ($6.00) – Senior 65 and older   
  • Student Ticket ($6.00) – Student ID required   
  • Child Ticket ($5.00) – children aged 3-12   
  • Children 2 and under register for free 

COVID-19 Safety: 

  • Pre-registration is required.  
  • Individual group size is limited to five (5) maximum. Workshop registration limited to five (5) groups.  
  • During the workshop, groups are required to follow physical distancing guidelines.  
  • Masks are recommended.

Burnaby Lake Regional Park

Colourful Creations

What happens when you mix blue with yellow, or red with purple? From the deep greens of leaves to the soft blues of the sky and the rich browns of the earth, nature presents a stunning palette of hues. This month, we are headed to Burnaby Lake Regional Park, located in Burnaby, to observe the colours found in nature by making our own paint and using it to create a nature painting! 

This event will take place rain or shine, so please come prepared for the weather.
